WHO WE ARE

A-GuyPlayingGuitar-LS01114102

Our Mission. We believe that music is an amazingly powerful medium with the tremendous ability to influence lives. Music permeates the world around us, reaching people right where they are, often without them even knowing it. Music can stir emotions in the heart, and it can provoke thoughts in the mind.  Because of these things, we believe music has enormous untapped potential to reach the lost. At the same time, we believe music has been underutilized as a tool for encouraging the saved. MakeShift Records thus exists for one reason: it is our mission to help put as much good christian-based music into the ears of listeners as we can.

Our Team. MakeShift Records is a collaboration between entertainment attorney, executive producer and studio owner Sammy Ciatu, Esq. and Arizona christian music industry veteran, artist and producer, Heath Michael Bottomly. Producer/Engineer, Robert Venable is responsible for our production facility, and we have an awesome support staff. MSR is also associated with a variety of other professionals available to contribute in their respective areas of expertise depending on the needs of each individual artist.

SAMMY CIATU, ESQ.

B-SamCiatu

While “attorney” most easily describes Sammy’s career outside MakeShift Records, he actually has a rather unique and varied background. He has worked closely with Bison Homes (fka Mirage Homes), an Arizona based real estate development firm, since 1997, where he has served as General Counsel and was also responsible for corporate publicity and the firm’s various web sites. From 1993 through 1997, Sammy was with publicly traded, Arizona based ILX Resorts Incorporated, where he served as Senior Vice President and General Counsel as well as Director of Hotel Marketing and was involved in corporate publicity.  From 1990 to 1993, he was Director of Marketing for Rawhide, the popular western theme park and concert venue formerly located in North Scottsdale.  Prior thereto, he was engaged in the full time practice of law with an emphasis on Arizona real estate, corporate, securities and financing matters, having various entertainment law clients.  Sammy's  educational background includes an LL.M. in Taxation from New York University, a J.D. from the Ohio State University College of Law, and a B.S. in Business Administration (Marketing Major with Consumer Behavior emphasis) from Miami University in Oxford, Ohio.  He is a member of the American Bar Association Forum on the Entertainment and Sports Industries (Music and Personal Appearances Division).  Sammy is a single dad and is originally from Alliance, Ohio. Most important, Sammy has been a Christian since 1993, and has been involved in various leadership roles through Scottsdale Bible Church.

HEATH MICHAEL BOTTOMLY

B-HeathFixedWeb

As the original founder of MakeShift Records, Heath has been very involved in producing and promoting the local scene and independent artists across the nation. He is also one of the creators and directors of IGNITION: Conference & Showcase, which has been instrumental in propelling several artists into the national spotlight. Heath also is a team leader for Next Generation Mission, which leads teams of bands to the U.K./Europe, and the Caribbean. As the former lead singer of the indie bands GlassCandle, Summit242, and Waiting for Thursday, Heath is currently working on a new solo release, "Theory of Flight".  He has written and recorded several songs that have achieved spots on independent radio across the country, iincluding “Angel” with the band Broken and “She Says” with the band Glass Candle. He has a heart for music and is committed to finding and helping develop some of the top Christian artists in the world. Heath is also a graphic designer and well known in the local community as a guest worship leader. Heath resides in Phoenix with his wife and their new addition, Braeden.

ROBERT VENABLE

RobHead1

Robert is a locally based producer/engineer and drummer who has worked with such artists as Evanescence, Newsboys, DC Talk, Cheap Trick, The Cult and Megadeth. Working with band projects thus comes very naturally for Robert, but he is also particularly gifted with hip-hop producing. He is a graduate of the renowned Tempe Conservatory of Recording Arts & Sciences, and is Pro Tools and Waves certified. Robert resides in Phoenix, Arizona with his wife. He is available 24/7 and is often found at the studio.

A Special Word About the Paradise West Records Investment Arm. PWR exists as a result of Sammy’s love of music and desire to help and serve others through sharing resources he has been blessed with.  As an established corporate attorney with a consumer marketing background, strong computer and graphics skills and some great equipment he had collected as a musician himself, he realized he had all the makings to help launch others with fewer resources (and more talent!). Paradise West Records is one small way that its founder hopes to fulfill a calling to help fellow christian musicians share the good news with the lost and to create music that encourages the saved.

“Looking back on the spring and summer of 2005, it was a whirlwind ride. I had just returned from a March ‘spring break’ vacation in the Caribbean with my daughter, and this strange restlessness kept tugging at my heart.  The saying, “nothing ever changes unless you change something” kept going through my mind. One day, without any real forethought, I found myself looking at buildings that could better house the studio I had built in my home. Soon, I was discussing restructuring the financial arrangements I had had with my sole law client for the last 8 years. And by May 15, I had designed a building, signed a lease, and begun the daily supervision of constructing the state-of-the-art recording facility I had dreamed of since high school.  On August 1, I began moving the studio out of my home, and buying the many other necessary pieces of equipment and furnishings.  On October 22, we had our first recording session and officially dubbed the dream ‘Paradise West’.” And so the journey began.
